Sea takes man’s leg in storm

2014-05-07 00:00

GEORGE — A amputee sailor from Mossel Bay had a narrow escape from the sea after his yacht capsized in Oyster Bay near Port Elizabeth on Monday night.

Darrel Hansen (62) managed to swim to shore, where he was found yesterday morning at about 8 am, naked and without his prosthetic leg after rough surf had literally stripped him bare.

Hansen was still too shocked to talk to the media yesterday but spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Craig Lambinon, said his yacht was in pieces on the rocks.

“The biggest part of his artificial leg was found but the most important part, which is needed to use the leg, is still missing,” Lambinon said.

He said Hansen had tried to shelter in the bay during bad weather on Monday. But a wave capsized his 8,2-metre yacht about 500 metres from the shore at about 9 pm on Monday.

Hansen managed to swim to the shore and then crawled up a dune to look for help in the coastal hamlet, which is mostly holiday homes.

NSRI volunteers helped Hansen. He was in their care until his wife fetched him yesterday afternoon, Lambinon said, adding the volunteers would keep Hansen’s possessions that may wash ashore at the NSRI depot for him to fetch later.
