Search for city flower to be widened

MSUNDUZI Municipality’s full council wants the entire city to participate in choosing a flower as an emblem for the municipality.

The council meeting at the end of August turned down a recommendation by the executive committee (Exco) that the Clivia miniata be adopted as the floral emblem of the Msunduzi Municipality. The clivia, also know as a bush lily, was recommended by Exco after a request from the KwaZulu-Natal Clivia Club. Francois van Rooyen, the club chairperson, said the flower occurs naturally in the forests around Pietermaritzburg.

“It has long been a favoured garden plant in the city as well as a valued medicinal plant with the Zulu people,” he added.

Council asked Exco to consider the presentation of a wider variety of flowers available in Pietermaritzburg in order to widen the process. Councillors said Van Rooyen had limited his presentation to one flower only.

While Exco is considering the Clivia miniata, council would also like to receive proposals from the public about alternatives that may be suitable as a floral emblem for the city.
