Second round of Night League ends on a draw

2011-03-29 00:00

MARITZBURG College played two matches over the weekend and unfortunately no reports were received regarding the other matches on Saturday.

Maritzburg College vs DHS

College dominated the possession but, together with poor finishing and some superb keeping by Richard Curtis in the DHS goal, had only one goal to show for their efforts at the break. This goal was scored by Grant Glutz from a penalty corner.

In the seventh minute of the second half, Nic Wanliss scored a field goal after a good build-up, but it took another 15 minutes before College started moving the ball around, thus creating more opportunities. Glutz scored his second in the 53rd minute and a minute later Nic Berichon scored from a penalty-corner variation.

Glutz made it a personal hat trick with a superb field goal with just 30 seconds remaining, to give College a 5-0 win.

Maritzburg College vs Trinityhouse

The first hockey match between these two schools ended with an 8-0 win for College. The first half saw an outstanding display by the home team as they scored seven goals without reply. Six penalty corners were converted from the nine awarded, three by Glutz, two by Tim Guise-Brown and one by Berichon. Haydn Griffiths scored a field goal.

The College attack tried to run with the ball instead of moving it around as they had in the first half, and with the Trinity defence playing like trojans, not as many scoring opportunities arose. Glutz scored the only goal in the second half with a minute remaining again from a penalty corner, for the 8-0 victory.

Other results: (home side first) Kearsney 2 Hilton 1; Westville 1 Michaelhouse 3.

Kearsney Night League

The second round of the hockey night league was completed this week at the Kearsney College astro in Botha’s Hill.

Kearsney drew 3-3 with Michaelhouse in a close and tough encounter in which both sides showed a willingness to throw everything into the attack but were found wanting in defence at times.

Michaelhouse took the lead in the first session and were soon two goals up. Kearsney came back well in the middle part of the game, to level the score.

The hosts did well to absorb pressure in the last five minutes when Michaelhouse went on the hunt to find a winning goal.

All goals were converted through the experimental one-on-one rule. All in all it was a good performance from both teams.

In the other two fixtures, the results were: Glenwood 3 Westville 1; Northwood 5 Clifton 2.
