Secrecy over Shembe’s funeral

2010-10-19 00:00

FOLLOWING the death of the leader of the Nazareth Baptist Church (also known as the Shembe Church), family members are worried that his close family are trying to keep details of his funeral secret.

Reverend Mini Shembe died last Thursday at Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital after he was admitted in coma following a car accident in September.

According to one of his brothers, Makhosonke Shembe, who was first at the scene of the accident, Shembe suffered serious head injuries during the accident.

In May this year, Mini announced he would contest the Shembe Church leadership, which three factions were disputing in the high court in Pietermaritzburg. This led to the postponement of the case.

“I have tried to contact his wife without success because her phone is off. No one has informed us about the funeral arrangement,” said Makhosonke.

Some family members suspect foul play after the hit-and-run accident that claimed Shembe’s life and visitors to his hospital bed were being vetted by his wife.

The Witness has reliably learnt that the funeral is scheduled for tomorrow in Inanda, but a family member, who wished not to be named, refused to release details of the service. Family members are concerned about not being told about the funeral details.
