Sehloho outpaces Robson yet again to win the Oxford Freshmarket Bluff Veterans’ Half-Marathon

2012-11-21 00:00

PETER Sehloho and Garett Robson repeated the one-two of last year when the Oxford Freshmarket Bluff Veterans’ Half-Marathon was held from Fynnlands Sports grounds at the weekend.

The experienced Sehloho remains the top distance age group runner, crossing the line in one hour, 18 minutes and 14 seconds for the challenging tour of the Bluff and leaving Robson over 800 metres adrift.

Robson, who next week flies out to compete in an international company relay in Japan, was only just able to hold off Willie Majombozi by 50 metres in the 40-49 age group, the youngest grouping in the event.

Boxer also won the 50-59 age group, while Rob Edourd-Betsy took the Yellowwood Park Club to the top of the podium in the 60+ category.

Yellowwood Park had a second success through Jenny Sutton, who proved to be the fastest of the women.

The Edendale 10-kilometre, hosted by Comrades Marathon Association and the municipality and tourism department, was won by Sibusiso Nzama of the Nedbank club in 30 minutes and 16 seconds, with Transnet’s Gladwin Mzazi second by little over 100 metres and a similar gap to third-placed Sibusiso Magzikekelo.

Given the challenge of the course and the rainy conditions, the times were impressive, with Nedbank’s Rutendo Nyahoza posting 35 minutes and 40 seconds for the 10 km lap and Bidvest’s Poppy Mlambo running 37:09. Anneile Dintwe, in the colours of UKZN, was the first local runner home in 37:18 for third place. The main race this weekend is the popular Sani Stagger half and full marathon.

The up-and-back run from Sani Hotel to the Lesotho border post and back attracts around 400 runners who commence their epic journey at 6 am, while an additional 230 runners are ferried to the top of the Sani Pass for the exceptionally steep rock-laden drop down run, which commences at 9 am

The Saturday event makes for a great weekend away and attracts runners from around the country, as well as a few internationals.

Although, by definition, the marathon is a Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier, the required sub-five hour finish is achieved by only a few of the competitors, given that even the winners will not break three hours, and the course record is still a little over three hours and 10 minutes.

Trish Crawley has more details on 083 447 0766. The other race scheduled for the weekend is the Sunkist Run for Fun 10 km which commences from Kings Park Athletics track (6 am). Details are available from Rocky on 078 505 0055
