Senior traffic cop will not be prosecuted

2014-07-18 00:00

THE National Prosecuting Authority has declined to prosecute a senior provincial inspector in the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department on allegations of defeating the administration of justice.

Bhekuyise Cyprian Ngidi (45) was charged when a gun he had reported stolen in 1996 was found in his possession.

He said Thornville police recovered the gun later that year and it was sent for tests before he was called to collect it. “I did not know that I was supposed to report back to police that it was recovered,” said Ngidi, expressing happiness that he would not be prosecuted.

His lawyer, Ashraf Mahomed, explained how the gun came to be in Ngidi’s possession.

“The person that was in possession of the firearm was shot dead when police recovered the gun. Police administration failed to capture that it’s been recovered and returned to its owner,” said Mahomed.
