Service awards: police officers praised for dedication

2011-10-17 00:00

THE SA Police Service in Pietermaritzburg held an awards ceremony for officers who have served for 10 to 30 years and more at Alexandra Road police station on Friday.

Pastor Tony Naicker of PMB police said that although there may be bad apples within the police, the officers who were awarded long-service medals on Friday show there are still members dedicated to upholding the rule of law.

Captain Dhanabalan Pillay of the fingerprint unit, who has served for 35 years, said it is an honour to receive a medal for his service.

Pillay said he is driven by a desire to bring lawbreakers to book. He said he has been involved in so many cases that no particular one stands out.

But the job takes its toll on family time because duty calls at any hour, he added.

Some officers believe that not much is done to see to it that officers who have been in the force for many years are adequately rewarded.

Captain Sikhosiphi Luthuli of Harburg said he has been with the force for 34 years, having faced the brutal 1977 attacks that saw the killing of officers on trains and buses.

“During those times I would sometimes consider quitting the job, but I’d also ask myself, ‘If I quit the job, who’s going to do it?’

“I’ve been involved in many cases with one involving a farm murder where a farmer was shot and killed in Harburg a couple of years ago,” said Luthuli.

He said he and a colleague traced the suspect to Umlazi in Durban and arested him in very difficult circumstances
