Sevens to round off rugby season

2009-08-12 00:00

THE Maritzburg College game against Glenwood on Saturday was the last official schools’ rugby game of the 2009 season in the province. The Midlands Sevens will now take place over the next few weeks.

This competition started a few years ago and is growing in popularity. It is now organised by Steve Botha and the Midlands Rugby Academy.

Matches in the Under 18 and 16 age groups will be played at the Woodburn complex over a number of weeks. Matches in the first round start today and then every Wednesday for four weeks.

Most of the rugby-playing schools in Maritzburg and several in the midlands will be playing. Matches in the first round last 14 minutes, with the finals being 10 minutes per half.

There will be two sections and all sides will play each other in each section, with two matches a side taking place this afternoon.

There are teams from Michaelhouse, Maritzburg College, Kearsney, St Charles, Voortrekker, Carter, Alexandra, Weston, Grace College, and Midlands Development.

Michaelhouse, College and Weston have more than one side, with St Charles entering three teams.

The positions in each pool will determine in which competition the sides will play and against which teams in the play-offs, culminating in three finals — the cup, the bowl and the shield.
