Sew proud: gogos run up graduation gowns

2013-05-30 00:00

IT was a graduation with a difference — the graduates were all gogos.

In their black gowns and green skirts, they were all smiles when they were called to the stage to receive their certificates.

Their achievement was having made what they were wearing — every stitch and button had been sewn by their own hands.

The Gogo Sewing Group had been learning the basics of sewing for six months in a project launched last year by the Hillcrest Aids Centre. The centre is run by Cwengi Myeni, a former sister of a clinic in the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Sewing instructor Ntombenhle Ngcobo devised a course that would take them from basics like hemming to creating a pattern and sewing a complete outfit in six months.

Wobbly seams became straighter and clothes began to take shape, and yesterday’s graduation outfits looked as professional as any other. They also made their own mortarboards.

Myeni said: “They are so proud of themselves and are very keen to show their grandchildren that they can learn new things even at their age.”
