Sharks: Ackermann back again?

2008-04-23 00:00

THE Sharks are considering recalling 38-year-old lock Johan Ackermann to their Super 14 squad as a replacement for the injured Steven Sykes, but a final decision has still to be made.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said that no final decision was expected before the weekend game against the Waratahs.

“If the Sharks do not pick up any more injuries against the Waratahs, then they may not call a replacement before their game against the Crusaders.”

Ackermann, who left Durban to pursue a business career in the Cape, is playing club rugby for Hamiltons.

Ackermann told News24 that he was approached by Sharks coach Dick Muir.

“It’s a matter between my new employers and the Sharks. They [his employers] will have to give permission.”

Wallaby prop Matt Dunning said this week that the Waratahs will try to employ the same tactics against the Sharks that the Brumbies used.

“They are very talented, but if you work hard on your defence and play for 80 minutes, some gaps may appear,” the experienced Dunning said.

Asked where the Sharks’ weaknesses might be, he said he was unable to comment.

“Maybe you should ask a flyhalf, not a prop forward.”
