Sharks: First run of season in low-key game

2009-01-29 00:00

THE strongest available Sharks team have their first run of the season tonight when they play the reserves at King’s Park.

The outing will be a low-key affair, said assistant coach Grant Bashford yesterday, but the Sharks’ Springboks will all see action in a match situation.

“We gave the Springboks an extra week for conditioning and they are all looking strong and fit.

But they need match practice and we only have this internal trial and the friendly against the Bulls [next Wednesday] before we start against the Stormers.”

A half-dozen players are on the injury list and will be watching from the sidelines this evening.

They are hooker Bismarck du Plessis, props Deon Carstens and Beast Mtwarira, lock Albert van den Berg, flank Jacque Botes and centre Waylon Murray.

Bashford said that Murray and Van den Berg were still a couple of weeks away from full fitness, but the other players are expected to be ready for the match against the Stormers.

Tonight’s game kicks off at 5 pm, but will be played behind closed doors.
