Sharks confirm Lourens Adriaanse deal

2013-08-20 00:00

THE Sharks yesterday confirmed that they had signed new Springbok squad member, Griquas tighthead Lourens Adriaanse, on a two-year deal.

Adriaanse left South Africa yesterday to join up with the other 25 Springboks in Argentina ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship international in Mendoza.

The 25-year-old Adriaanse has taken the place of Free State prop Trevor Nyakane, who has been dropped from the Bok squad following repeated breaches of team protocol.

Sharks commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli told Weekend Witness last Friday that a contract offer had been made to Adriaanse, “but we are waiting for him to sign the contract” before making an announcement.

But Straeuli was yesterday able to officialy confirm that terms had been agreed.

“We have been impressed with Lourens’s performances for both the Cheetahs and Griquas this year. He has a good work rate around the park and will add depth to our tight five.”

Straeuli said the new options would also allow the coaching staff “to manage the players” during the marathon Super Rugby season.

The Sharks will have the country’s top three tightheads in their Super Rugby squad, with Adrianse joining current Test prop Jannie du Plessis and Wiehahn Herbst at King’s Park.

Sharks CEO John Smit yesterday welcomed the new signing.

“Lourens has displayed his immense potential and value as a tighthead prop, and is a good addition to our squad. We look forward to welcoming him to the Sharks family.”

The Sharks yesterday started preparations for Friday night’s Currie Cup outing against Free State in Bloemfontein.

Backline coach Sean Everitt said that fullback Odwa Ndungane (hamstring strain) was unlikely to play.

“But Tim Whitehead, Sizo Maseko and Keegan Daniel have come through well and should be available.”

He said it was a great relief to have the Sharks’ Currie Cup campaign back on track with the welcome weekend win over the Lions.
