Sharks home match moved for SA cricket

A clash with South Africa’s first ODI cricket match against Australia at Kingsmead on April 3 has resulted in the Sharks postponing their home Super 14 rugby game against the Hurricanes.

The Sharks were to have played the Hurricanes on the Friday evening but down the road, at Kingsmead, the Australian cricketers will be opening their one-day series with a day-night clash against South Africa starting at 2.30 pm on that day.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said yesterday that the Super 14 game will now take place the next day (Saturday, April 4) with a 5.05 pm kick-off.

The Sharks open their Super 14 challenge against the Stormers on February 14 and play their first home game against the LIons at King’s Park a week later.

The Sharks have an excellent Super 14 draw and play seven games at home with six on the road.

The Springboks play two Tests at King’s Park next season — against the All Blacks and the British Lions — while the Sharks meet the touring Lions.

Van Zyl said preparations for the new season are “going well”.

“All our players have signed for the 2009 season and we are now negotiating with a number of them for 2010 as well.”

Van Zyl said Beast Mtawarira, Johann Muller and Ryan Kankowski have already signed contracts until the end of 2010.

Meanhile the Sharks have confirmed that the Wildebeests will play under a new name in the Vodacom Cup next year.

They will be known as the Sharks XV and they will have a new coach in Sean Everitt, the former College Rovers and Sharks assistant coach.

Everitt will have Ryan Strudwick, the Rovers head coach, and former Sharks prop Ettienne Fynn as his assistants.
