Sharks in a frenzy as sex toys infringe rugby brand rights

2011-05-27 00:00

THE Sharks are throwing their toys out the cot over controversial adult toys that went on sale last week and bear a logo that looks much like theirs. Other items sport a logo similar to that of the Bulls team.

The Sharks products are being marketed under the name “Shark-attack”. The company concerned was previously embroiled in controversy over a Tiger Woods sex toy.

Sharks marketing manager Michael Ablett confirmed yesterday that the matter is being investigated to determine whether legal action can be taken against the company for infringing trademark rights by selling articles purporting to be from the Sharks without their permission.

“If so, we will decide what steps we can take,” he said.

“I have no idea what the products are and have not seen any of them. This is not in line with anything we advocate in the Sharks,” he added.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl is quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying, “All our licences are approved by Signet [a licensing and marketing agent].

“But we would never, ever want the Sharks brand to be associated with something like that.”
