Sharks junior sides go down to Golden Lions in close encounters

2014-08-05 00:00

IT was a winless afternoon for the junior Sharks in the national age-group competition matches at Woodburn Rugby Stadium last Friday.

Sharks U19, lying fifth out of the seven provinces in Group A, and the Sharks U21 side — sixth out of the seven teams in their section — both lost to the Johannesburg-based Golden Lions.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Sharks U19 who outscored Lions U19 by four tries to three in their exciting yet ultimately disappointing 27-24 defeat. The goalkicking boots belonged to Lions U19 flyhalf Shaun Reynolds whose 12 points proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Golden Lions U21 beat the Sharks U21 30-19 and it was Lions fullback Hanco Deale who played a big part with the boot in slotting half his side’s points as well as scoring a try.

There is still time for Sharks U21 to re-group, as they still have to play the Free State Cheetahs at King’s Park on August 16, North West Leopards in Potchefstroom on August 30 and Border Bulldogs in East London on September 6, followed by the Cheetahs and Lions away and a few more matches before competition end.

In much the same manner, Sharks U19 also have scope to improve this season.
