Sharks likely to lose Muller to Boks

2009-09-01 00:00

THE Sharks are likely to be without captain and lock Johann Muller for Friday’s Currie Cup game against Boland in Wellington.

With the Springboks suffering from injuries to two of their locks on tour — Andries Bekker has returned home and Bakkies Botha is in doubt for Saturday’s Test in Brisbane — Muller is expected to be called up as a replacement.

Bok coach Peter de Villiers said yesterday he was waiting for advice from his medical team before making a decision, but it is likely that Muller will be flown to Australia within the next day or two.

The Sharks, still in a state of shock after their poor showing and 21-9 defeat by Western Province, have a good chance to regain their composure and winning form against Boland, who are at the bottom of the log.

The Sharks have lost their promising young tighthead Wiehahn Herbst to a dislocated ankle, which will keep him out of rugby for four months, but the rest of the team came through the Province game without injury.

Friday’s game in Wellington kicks off at 3 pm.
