Sharks one, Lions nil as the Beast agrees to stay in Durban

2011-01-06 00:00

A PRE-CHRISTMAS Witness report was confirmed yesterday when it was announced that the Beast, the popular Springbok loosehead prop Tendai Mtawarira, will continue to play his rugby in Durban rather than Johannesburg.

The Golden Lions, bankrolled by IT tycoon Robert Gumede, made a desperate attempt to lure Mtawariria to the highveld late last year.

But Jeremy Thomson, who has acted as Mtawarira’s mentor since his move from Zimbabwe to Durban, told The Witness yesterday that there had never been any real danger of the Beast moving and the issue was settled amicably with the Sharks this week.

“Tendai and the Sharks are now in agreement and he has the right contract. Tendai is happy to be staying in Durban, he knows he has made the right decision and he is looking forward to the new season,” said Thomson.

While the Beast now wants to put the matter to bed, the Sharks are not letting sleeping dogs lie. They have lodged a complaint with the SA Rugby Union that the Golden Lions were in breach of regulations in approaching a player with a binding contract.
