Sharks welcome first black captain, who will lead team in Currie Cup

2014-07-30 00:00

THE Sharks will have their first ever black captain when one of the world’s oldest domestic rugby competitions starts next month.

Lubabalo “Tera” Mtembu, a 23-year-old from King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, was appointed yesterday to lead them during the upcoming Currie Cup.

The hard-working loose forward becomes the 72nd player to captain the union and will take his bow when the Sharks travel to Kimberley to face Griquas on August 9.

He replaces Keegan Daniel, who is headed to Japan to continue his career there.

Springbok vice-captain Bismarck du Plessis was the 2014 Super Rugby captain, although his involvement in the round-robin phase of the Currie Cup, along with the other South Africa players, is expected to be minimal due to the Rugby Championship.

“Tera is a talented player and I have great faith in his ability,” director of Sharks rugby Jake White said.

“My hope is that he embraces this leadership role and gains valuable experience as the tournament progresses, which will assist us in grooming him to take the next step into becoming a more consistent Super Rugby player who can eventually stake a claim for international honours.”

Mtembu, a prominent member of last season’s Currie Cup winning team, made four starts and five substitute appearances during this year’s Super Rugby competition, as the Sharks bowed out at the semi-final stage over the weekend.
