Sharks xv: Kankowski dismisses talk of clash with Plumtree

2013-05-01 00:00

SPRINGBOK Ryan Kankowski has dismissed reports of a clash with coach John Plumtree, and the No. 8 is likely to return to action for the Sharks XV in their Vodacom Cup quarter-final outing against the Golden Lions at King’s Park on Friday.

Kankowski, who has battled to find his form since returning from a six-month stint in Japan, was surprisingly dropped from the Sharks squad by Plumtree ahead of the Super Rugby tour of New Zealand and Australia.

Reports at the time quoted Kankowski as saying he was “bitter” and “upset” with Plumtree’s decision and claimed he was reconsidering his future with the Sharks.

But in an interview with Ballz Visual Radio yesterday, a positive Kankowski denied there was any problem in the Sharks camp.

He admitted that he had not been playing “to the best of my ability” when he was dropped and said he was working hard to regain his place in the Sharks’ Super Rugby squad.

The rangy number eight has been out practising with the Sharks XV this week and he, with Willem Alberts, could see action against the Golden Lions on Friday.

Kankowski said reports of a disagreement with Plumtree “had been blown out of proportion”.

“I’ve known Plum for nine years and he is more of a mate than a coach. If you are not playing well, you must expect to be dropped … I’m very happy here in Durban with the Sharks and I’m getting stuck in and feeling fantastic.”
