Shavathon month: making headlines for cancer awareness

2011-03-04 00:00

MARCH is Cansa Shavathon month, when ordinary citizens and organisations are encouraged to show solidarity with cancer survivors by shaving their hair or spraying it in rainbow colours for a good cause.

“We raised under R10 000 yesterday and we are hoping to raise that figure this weekend,” said Cansa project manager Tasmia Dayaram.

Members of the public are urged to come in their numbers and show their support for people affected by cancer. A shave or colour for adults costs only R50 and children under 12 pay R25, or R10 for a streak of colour.

All the proceeds will go to Cansa, which aims to raise R7 million nationally during 2011’s Shavathon challenge. “All funds are used to enable us to keep on delivering unique and integrated services to the public,” Dayaram added.

Cansa is one of the leading cancer control organisations in South Africa; the organisation funds cancer research, influences policymakers and educates the public on the prevention and detection of cancer. Most importantly, it gives support to people affected by the disease.

The Shavathon will be hosted in all the major malls in Pietermaritzburg. Liberty Midlands Mall is the main venue this weekend. For more information, call Tasmia Dayaram at 033 342 9837/084 4455 536, e-mail tdayaram@cansa.org.za or go to www.shavathon.org.za.
