Shelly Beach’s bubbly fruit seller loves meeting new people

RAJ Dawnarine owns a fruit outlet, Raj’s Fresh Produce, just off Marine Drive in Shelly Beach. He has lived on the South Coast for his whole life and is passionate about his business, which enjoys a lot of support from locals.

The Witness spoke to the bubbly businessman about his trade and about how he spends his time on the coast.

What do you love most about the south coast?

Dawnarine: The weather, the scenery and the local people are absolutely fantastic.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Dawnarine: I have a passion for this business; I have been doing it my whole life. I love meeting new people every day.

What is your favourite thing to do on the south coast?

Dawnarine: Fishing and driving along the coastline.

What would you like to see the local government do more of?

Dawnarine: They have been fantastic so far. In the apartheid era I would not be able to run this business. Asking for anything more would be greedy.

Do you enjoy the holiday season on the coast?

Dawnarine: Yes. It is always nice to see the influx of people and greet them.

What is your nickname?

Dawnarine: Raj is my nickname.

What is the biggest problem facing the world today?

Dawnarine: The uncertain future of our children.

Who is your hero?

Dawnarine: My wife and kids. I was in an accident and was in hospital for over a year. I lost all my assets and they stood by me. They are my everything.

Where will you be for Christmas and New Year’s?

Dawnarine: In my business working.

How do you keep healthy?

Dawnarine: I eat fruit and running around here (the fruit stall) gives me a lot of exercise.

What is your favourite sport to watch on television?

Dawnarine: I enjoy the cricket and soccer.
