Shoot-out near Fatima Meer’s house kills four

2010-04-01 00:00

DURBAN police killed four gunmen after a shoot-out in the Sydenham area yesterday evening. Two other gunmen escaped during the shooting near the house of the late struggle icon Fatima Meer.

A Durban city councillor, whom the police could not identify by name, is said to live in the same street.

Police were alerted by a neighbour about a vehicle moving around the block.

A police vehicle was sent to the area. On seeing the vehicle, the men opened fire on the police, who retaliated and killed the four.

Mdunge said the men were scouting a particular house, but would not say if it was Meer’s or the councillors.

The gang is said to be targeting areas such as uMhlanga, Verulam, Indwedwe and Sydenham.

“This gang is wanted for various crimes and is linked to housebreaking, hijacking, armed robbery and murder. Two of them got away, but the police are on their heels,” said Mdunge.

No officer was hurt during the shoot-out and four firearms were recovered. They will be taken for ballistic tests to check if they are linked to other crimes.
