Shoot-out: suspect killed in welbedacht

2011-10-13 00:00

CHATSWORTH crime intelligence officers killed a suspect in a shoot-out in Welbedacht on Tuesday, the provincial police said yesterday.

Spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the team was following a tip-off on the whereabouts of suspects wanted for various crimes including car hijacking, house robberies, murder and attempted murder in the Durban area when they came under fire.

Mdunge said when the police arrived at the house the suspects opened fire and the police retaliated, killing one while two suspects fled on foot.

A CZ 83 pistol was recovered from the deceased suspect.

No officers were injured.

Provincial police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mammonnye Ngobeni praised the officers for standing their ground.

A Mazda 323, which was positively identified as having been hijacked in Chatsworth this month, was recovered at the house.

A 9 mm Norinco pistol, subwoofer speakers, amplifiers, cellphones and music CDs were also recovered from the house.

The search is still on for the two suspects.
