Shooting: IFP man (71) granted bail

2009-11-23 00:00

A 71-YEAR-OLD murder accused, Zwelempi Gumede, who is among four family members charged with the murder of an ANC supporter and attempted murder of seven others during an election victory celebration on April 27, was on Friday granted bail of R5 000 by Judge President Vuka Tshabalala.

This was in terms of an agreement reached between the State and defence in view of Gumede’s age.

His co-accused, Funinkosi Gumede (41), Busani Gumede (21) and Mpathiseni Gumede (29), will remain in custody pending the trial which has been set down for hearing from August 30, 2010.

Tight security surrounded the high court as crowds of IFP and ANC supporters gathered to hear the outcome of the bail application.

Afterwards, ANC members celebrated the news that three of the accused are to remain in custody, while IFP members looked on glumly.

The accused are charged with shooting dead Zimisele Hlongwane and injuring Sindisiwe Mnyandu, Gladys Gcumisa, Nomkhosi Phakhathi, Thenjiwe Gwala, Nonhlanhla Kweyame, Phumzile Mnyandu and Njabulo Mkhize, during an incident in the Esigqumeni area of Swayimane.
