Shoppers set to be searched

2007-11-22 00:00

SHOPPERS will be scanned and searched at random when entering the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Durban.

This follows last week's shootout where robbers fled with 31 Rolex watches worth R1,5 million, injuring policeman Inspector Andre Mostert on their way out.

“Given the current crime situation this country faces, it's unfortunate, but we have to use scanners,” said centre manager Preston Gaddy.

Security personnel at the centre have been boosted with 40 additional members, a total of over 100 guards on site.

Gripper barriers across the main exit will be put in place to pierce the tyres of fleeing robbers.

Gaddy said a joint operational centre with SAPS, Metro police and emergency services ER24 also started operating at the centre yesterday for the festive season ending on January 15, 2008.
