Shot man drives, collapses

2011-11-22 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man is fighting for his life at Grey’s Hospital after he was shot several times in Camps Drift, off College Road yesterday afternoon.

Suresh Seethar was sitting in his black VW Polo with a friend when he was shot at, said police.

Five bullets were pumped into his vehicle, hitting him in the leg, arm and abdomen.

Eye witness Justine van Wyk, who said she was with Seethar when the shooting occured, said two men approached the vehicle.

One of the men tried to open the door, but realising it was locked, started firing at the driver’s door and window.

“… The two men appeared from nowhere. The one with the gun went to the driver’s side and when the doors would not open he fired at Seethar. Everything happened so quickly that in no time the men were gone,” Van Wyk told The Witness.

Seethar managed to drive his vehicle down West Street, but lost consciousness near the corner of West Street and Victoria Road.

Paramedics took him to Grey’s Hospital and late yesterday he was taken to theatre.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the injured Seethar managed to start his vehicle and drove into the CBD in an attempt to get to a hospital.

“However, he lost consciousness and the vehicle came to a stop on West Street.

“The friend who was with him during the incident contacted the emergency services, who took him to hospital,” said Jeevan.

The motive is unknown, but an intensive search for the suspects is underway.

Police appeal to anyone with information to contact detective Captain Vinesh Balkaran at the Alexandra Road police on 033 845 7715 or 079 500 0630.
