A 36-YEAR-OLD taxi driver is fighting for his life in Edendale Hospital after he walked five kilometres to seek help when he was shot by hijackers.

The hijackers then made off with his taxi on Richmond Road late on Saturday evening.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said paramedics arrived on the scene to find the man in a very serious condition, having sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Banks said advanced life support intervention was performed on the man before he was taken to Edendale Hospital in a serious condition for further medical treatment.

The Witness gathers that the injured driver, Zeph Nxumalo, walked for five kilometres looking for help before collapsing outside a house in White Road.

Members of the public later found him lying outside the house. They then summoned emergency personnel.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thulani Zwane confirmed that the man was shot on Richmond Road and that the hijackers went off with the taxi.

“The taxi driver was shot and thrown out of the taxi.

“At this moment we are not sure how many people were in the vehicle.

“The police have not arrested anyone on this matter as we are still busy with investigations,” he said.

Zwane urged witnesses of the incident to contact the Alexandra Police Station to make a full report.
