A MAN who was shot in the head on Monday allegedly robbed a man and his child at knife-point.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the man and his child were in a car stationery at the traffic lights of Church and Boshoff streets when the man allegedly threatened him with a knife and robbed him of his belongings.

“The victim allegedly shot and injured the suspect. Police arrived, the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.”

ER24 spokesperson Carla Potgeiter said the ER24 team had stabilised the man who had been shot once in the head and once in the chest.

“He is still alive. He went for scans and an operation and is stable as far as we know,” said Potgeiter.

Zwane said the man would appear in Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court after his release from hospital.

Concerned citizen and grandmother Brenda O’Connor said she and her grandson had almost been robbed on the same corner last Friday.

“We were stopped at the robot and this man came up to the car and started shouting at my grandson.

“He tried my window, then my grandson’s. He had his face right up against my grandson’s window and he was shouting, “Give me something or I will smash your car’,” said O’Connor. “It is a dangerous intersection and police need to do something.” She said her grandson, who is only nine years old, had been traumatised by the incident.
