Shot suspect had interdict against police

2009-02-05 00:00

THE suspect who was killed during a shoot-out with the police in Durban on Tuesday, and who was wanted in connection with the assassination of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi, had sought a court interdict preventing police from killing him.

The suspect was yesterday identified as Bongani Mkhize, chairman of the kwaMaphumulo Taxi Association.

Mkhize (45) was shot dead by police in Durban’s Umgeni Road. He made headlines last year when he approached the Durban High Court for an interdict preventing police from killing him.

Mkhize claimed that he was on the list of suspects wanted in connection with the murder of Kranskop police commissioner Superintendent Zethembe Chonco.

Chonco, who headed the province’s taxi violence unit, was killed in an ambush last August.

Five suspects wanted in connection with Chonco’s murder have been shot and killed by police.

Mkhize’s alleged involvement in the murder of Inkosi Zondi has fuelled speculation that the assassination was linked to taxi violence in the Msinga area and not political violence, as has been claimed.

Police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe refused to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, Mswayo Mkhize (25), one of two suspects arrested in connection with Zondi’s killing, appeared in court yesterday.

The Witness learnt yesterday that this suspect is also a member of the KwaMaphumulo Taxi association and related to Bongani Mkhize.

The other suspect arrested on Tuesday is due to appear in court this morning.
