Show inspired by Bosman

2009-11-05 00:00

IN WILD and Fragrant at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban, Barbie Meyer slips in and out of clothes and characters, to give a delicious taste of Herman Charles Bosman’s hilarious stories and life.

Wild and Fragrant is Meyer’s third Bosman show and asked why she had returned to him for inspiration, she says: “His work gets under your skin — I’ve been hooked since I was a little girl. After every show I’m always left wanting to explore just a little more, wanting to re-read a story or another poem... I work on other pieces but always seem to come back to Bosman’s stories — it’s like coming home.”

Bosman was a South African writer and journalist who became famous for capturing the rhythms of backveld Afrikaans speech even though he wrote in English. He is widely regarded as the greatest short story writer to come out of this country.

Whether you have read Bosman’s works or not, Wild and Fragrant is sure to delight and surprise you. It is challenging, brilliantly written and eminently entertaining

See Wild and Fragrant at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Avenue (off Bartle Road) at 8 pm on November 6 and November 7 and at 2 pm and 6.30 pm on November 8. Tickets are R80. Book at Computicket.
