Showcasing the diversity among local artists

2008-11-18 00:00

An exhibition exploring the realities of the lives of up-and-coming artists in KwaZulu-Natal was held outside the Tatham Art Gallery last Thursday.

The exhibition showcased the Umgungundlovu district’s artistic and cultural diversity, and drew more than 50 artists. All of them have gone through art training and have learnt basic business training and marketing skills.

This is a pilot project for a broader Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism Pietermaritzburg cluster this year, which will encompass both the performing and non-performing arts and involve all seven municipalities in the Umgungundlovu district.

Cash cheques, ranging from R250 to R1 000, which were sponsored by Standard Bank, were given to artists who excelled.

Charles Minnaar, acting manager of the Pietermaritzburg cluster for the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism and the man in charge of the project said: “There’s a vibrancy. The art industry is just that — an industry. It is wonderful to see this talent being nurtured right here where it was born — in the district.”
