Sifiso Zulu to appear in Durban court

2010-02-03 00:00

DURBAN businessman and socialite Sifiso Zulu will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday for charges relating to a police roadblock on Durban’s Florida Road.

Police confirmed that Zulu was charged with being drunk in a public place, defeating the ends of justice and resisting arrest.

Zulu and his friends were stopped at a routine roadblock by Metro police on Friday, January 22.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said Zulu became agitated when police started searching their vehicle.

“He started to interfere with the search and an altercation occurred. Police removed him from the car,” he said.

Zulu was arrested and detained at the Berea police station. He was released with a warning.

The controversial Zulu is also on trial for two culpable homicide charges relating to an accident when his BMW X5 failed to stop at a traffic light on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR Avenue) and crashed into a bakkie carrying 12 people.

The bakkie was carrying members of the Soul’s Harbour church.

Mangosuthu University of Technology students Hlengiwe Dlamini and Sidumisile Mncube were killed in the accident. The trial resumes in March.

In October, Zulu was caught drinking in the car park of the Pirates Life-Saving Club, which is situated a few metres away from Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World.

He was not charged.
