Sister: I hired hitman

2011-02-15 00:00

A 38-YEAR-OLD woman pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday to hiring a hitman to kill her brother — allegedly on the instructions of their mother.

Tembelihle Eunice Mdakane handed herself over to the police in November 2010, five years after the crime, the court heard.

In her statement before Judge Rishi Seegobin and an assessor, Mdakane described yesterday how she accompanied the hitman (identified only as Mvelase) to the Shobalenyathi area (near Nkandla) to look for her brother, Nqobizitha Cyprian Mdakane (32), on September 22, 2005 and found him asleep.

“I peeped into a rondavel where a candle was alight and observed the deceased sleeping near the door. I showed Mvelase where he was,” said Mdakane.

Mvelase took his firearm, pushed the door open and entered. Her brother sat up and the hitman fired two shots at him. He fell to the ground bleeding from the head.

Mdakane said a month later her mother sent her sister to pay the hitman the R5 000 they had agreed on.

She said she kept thinking about the murder and “agonising” about what she had done. In November 2010 Mdakane handed herself over to the police.

Describing what led to the murder, she said her brother had been living with their mother in the Nkandla area, while Mdakane was living in Johannesburg.

About a month before the murder her mother called her, crying. “She said the deceased had threatened to kill her with his bare hands before he threw her out of her home.”

Mdakane said her brother and her mother had an acrimonious relationship and her brother often swore at and abused their mother.

“My mother said she was fed up with his behaviour and she asked me to find someone to kill him.”

Mdakane said she suggested to her mother that this was a “drastic solution” and that they should call a family meeting, but her mother was adamant. As a result Mdakane approached Mvelase, who lived in Alexandra hostel, and asked him to find a hitman. “Mvelase himself agreed to kill the deceased.”

The court was told Mdakane’s mother is currently on bail awaiting trial in connection with the murder. The alleged hitman, however, is still at large.

Sentence is due to be passed on Mdakane today.
