Sisters lose their legs

2011-05-07 00:00

IN a family tragedy, three sisters from Witbank in Mpumalanga had five of their legs amputated on Tuesday after a horror crash on the highway outside Marble Hall in Limpopo.

The girls — 18, seven and five years old — were travelling with their parents from Pietersburg to Witbank on Monday evening when their Toyota Camry slid on gravel in a turn.

As the vehicle slid off the road, their dad, Simon Mokoatedi, turned sharply to the right, upon which the vehicle spun across the road to collide with the roadside railing on the opposite shoulder.

The steel railing pierced the right-hand side of the sedan, cutting all but one of the three girls’ six legs.

The legs of both the older sisters were amputated below the knee while their five-year-old sister lost her right leg at the knee.

“My daughters were sleeping when the accident happened and could not understand what was happening.

“They were in a lot of pain,” said Mokoatedi.

He immediately called the Marble Hall police who summoned an ambulance.

The girls were taken to a hospital in Groblersdal on Monday night and transferred early on Tuesday to Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion.

Mokoatedi said they will get prosthetic limbs as soon as possible.

He said his girls are doing all right, but it is not know yet when they will be able to go home.
