Sit-in against regional committee enters third day

2011-06-02 00:00

ANGRY ANC members who call themselves “activists’ forum” are not letting up on their calls for the party’s Moses Mabhida regional executive committee (REC) to be disbanded — along with the region’s branches — over allegations of a “mafia” style leadership that is dividing the party.

Yesterday the forum’s sit-in, staged at the REC’s offices in Jabu Ndlovu (Loop) Street, demanding to be addressed by the provincial ANC , entered its third day. By yesterday they said that they had not been addressed since the start of the sit-in on Monday.

The forum levelled serious accusations against the REC secretary Super Zuma; chairperson, Edward Dlala, the former Umngeni Municipality Mayor; deputy secretary Nonhlanhla Msomi; treasurer and former Msunduzi Municipality speaker, Alpha Shelembe; and councillor, Thobani Zuma.

In a press statement issued yesterday, the KZN MEC for the department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube said that she will issue a stern warning to the new Msunduzi council that there will be “zero tolerance of corruption and laziness”.

Dube, whose department has been working around the clock to bring normality to the finances of the city and revive service delivery, will oversee the inauguration of the new mayor and the setting up of the new council.

The protesters said they will mobilise more than 1 500 ANC supporters today to protest against the REC members outside the city hall where KwaZulu-Natal Cosatu chairperson, Chris Ndlela is expected to be inaugurated as Msunduzi Mayor this afternoon.
