SIX men arrested for business robberies in Umlazi may be responsible to other business robberies and a cash-in-transit heist that were reported in the province, police said.

Durban’s Flying Squad made the arrests on Wednesday.

Police said eight armed men accosted employees and customers at Nje’s tavern in Umlazi on Sunday at about 8.30 pm.

They allegedly robbed them of cash, liquor and cellphones.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the suspects fled in their getaway vehicle. A case of business robbery was opened at Bhekithemba police station.

Zwane said the arrested suspects were between the ages 22 and 42, and were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Five were arrested at Umlazi and the sixth was held at Umgababa near Umkomaas, he said.

“During the arrest, four unlicensed firearms, 54 live bullets, as well as nine cellphones, cash and liquor all suspected to be taken during the robbery, were recovered. One of the suspects was found in possession of 44 straws of heroin,” Zwane said.

The recovered guns will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the country.

The men are expected appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of business robbery, possession of drugs and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the police for the arrests.
