Six die in head-on collision

2013-11-11 00:00

SIX members of a family travelling together in a car were killed yesterday when they were involved in a head-on collision on the N2 outside Empangeni.

It is believed an oncoming truck had a tyre burst, causing it to spin out of control, resulting in the collision with an oncoming VW Jetta on the N2 at Honey Farm.

The occupants of the car all died on the scene, a statement from the Department of Transport said.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu expressed condolences and said a team of experts had been assembled to investigate the accident.

“Weekends have become notorious for accidents that claim scores of people in the province … We would like to again urge road users to be extra cautious, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and strictly adhere to road traffic rules,” he said.

He said the intensified law enforcement operations that started during the “October Transport Month” will be ramped up as the festive season draws closer.

“We will continue to intensify traffic police visibility while engaging with all stakeholders to own up and prioritise safety on our road,” he said.
