Six foreign nationals arrested over mountain rise business robberies

2011-07-26 00:00

SIX Congolese and Zimbabwean nationals aged between 20 and 30 years were arrested in connection with four business robberies in the Mountain Rise area.

The robberies occurred between June and July.

In an intelligence-driven operation on Thursday and Friday the police swooped on a block of flats in Hoosen Haffajee and Retief Streets and arrested four male suspects.

Further investigations led the police to two houses in KwaPata, in Plessislaer where they arrested two more foreign nationals in connection with the same offences.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the suspects pounced on businesses during opening or closing times.

The suspects would then spray teargas or hold up the staff and shoppers at gunpoint.

During the arrests police recovered three cellphones and airtime vouchers to the value of R30 000, as well as R10 000 in cash.

A foreign vehicle with false number plates and a canister of tear gas were recovered.

The suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly. Investigations are continuing.
