FIVE men and a woman appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with dealing in almost 190 kg of dagga between February and August this year.

The accused were arrested at the Ezinketheni informal settlement near Copesville on Friday following a six-month undercover police operation.

According to a police report issued at the time of the arrests, the group was accused of selling dagga grown in Lesotho, in Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Inanda and kwaMashu.

The accused — Robert Tsholele (32), Moory Mofokeng (20), Karabo Joene (29), Clement Mncibe (28), Fusi Kere (23) and Filipi Matsibulo (28) — did not plead to any charges before magistrate Ashin Singh yesterday.

However, they told the court that they plan to plead guilty.

The case was postponed to September 2 to enable them to finalise legal aid representation.

All the accused were remanded in custody until then.

They face six different counts of dealing in various amounts of dagga in the Copesville area on February 6, March 19, April 25, May 18, June 19, and August 23 this year.

The amounts involved were 11,4 kg, 7,15 kg, 17,4 kg, 20,2 kg, 2,8 kg, and 132 kg respectively.

According to information released by police, when the accused were arrested the dagga seized on Friday alone was worth over R300 000.
