SIX people were killed yesterday evening and four others seriously injured when two vehicles collided on the N11 towards Newcastle near the Dundee off-ramp.

Paramedics from ER24 and KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Services found the occupants outside their vehicles.

Six people, including children aged eight and four, from the one car, had already died, said Werner Vermaak of ER24.

Four people had been flung out of the other car and were taken to hospital in Ladysmith with multiple fractures and possible spinal injuries.

After an accident in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, emergency workers abseiled down an embankment to look for personal belongings. Twenty-two passengers, among them children, were injured when their minibus taxi plunged down an embankment on New Greytown Road.

Fortunately there were no serious injuries. Vermaak said paramedics from various services found all the passengers sitting next to the road, having managed to crawl out of the taxi and up the embankment before the emergency services arrived.

Nineteen passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, three were treated for “moderate” injuries before being taken to Edendale Hospital.

On Saturday morning a minibus taxi drove into a fence in Imbali, slightly injuring four people. The driver was arrested for alleged drunken driving.

In the evening, a pedestrian was killed on the N3 near the Church Street off-ramp. Two other pedestrians were hurt in accidents, one near Northdale Hospital and another on the Edendale road.
