Six people injured as Jetta is torn in half in N3 collision with BMW

2010-03-30 00:00

A CAR was torn in half by the force of a collision on the N3 late on Sunday night.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 said the collision happened on the N3 northbound near Shongweni.

“It is unclear what happened, but it is believed that the Jetta was on the N3 heading towards Durban when the driver lost control and went through the median and crashed into the BMW that was heading towards Pietermaritzburg. The impact was so great that it caused the Jetta to shear in half,” Wicks said.

One person was lying critically injured between the two parts of the Jetta. A young boy found on the back seat of the BMW had suffered a head injury.

Both needed advanced life support care and were placed on manual ventilators at the scene.

The jaws of life were needed to free the driver of the BMW. The driver and three other people were treated for possible neck and back injuries and multiple lacerations.

Five people were treated for minor injuries.

Yesterday morning a man was killed when his vehicle collided with an articulated truck before catching fire and burning out completely on the M4 near La Mercy, said Wicks.
