Six poachers arrested in Camperdown

2011-04-30 00:00

SIX poachers were arrested and charged with trespassing after they were caught with a pack of 25 dogs while rounding up a reedbuck on a farm in Camperdown outside Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday morning.

The owner of Tala Valley sugarcane farm, Peter Penwarden, said the poachers were initially hunting on a farm next to his. He said they were first seen chasing an oribi, which ran onto his farm.

A security company was alerted and the men were caught after entering his porperty, said Penwarden.

“This is an ongoing problem for us local farmers, as there are constantly dogs hunting on the farms at weekends in the Tala Valley,” said Penwarden.

“To actually catch some people in the act of poaching with the help of the security firm is a great achievement.”

Despite the fact that he does not keep game in his farm, Penwarden does allow buck to graze on his open land.

He said the dogs were handed over to SPCA in Pietermaritzburg.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the six suspects appeared in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court and were released on bail.

Jeevan said she did not know the amount of bail, or when the accused will next appear in court.

“There were three juveniles who were also released. For now I don’t have the details of the case because the docket is still in court,” she said.
