Six women sacked for assault

2014-10-08 00:00

SIX women who assaulted their superior at Baynesfield Estate last month have been fired.

This was said yesterday by Baynesfield Estate’s managing director, Myles van Deventer.

He said the female employees were dismissed last week after a disciplinary hearing. They had previously been suspended for a month following the assault on their superior.

The women alleged in an interview with The Witness after the incident that the man had been sexually harassing them.

However, Van Deventersaid they did not raise the allegation of sexual harrassment as a defence at their disciplinary hearing.

Van Deventer said the inquiry was conducted by an independent chairperson.

“This sanction [dismissal] was in line with the company’s disciplinary code of conduct,”he said.

Van Deventer added that the superior in question had asked to be moved to another section of the company, and was transferred.

The United Chemical Industry Metal Health and Allied Workers’ Union (UCI Meshawu) regional organiser, Lethukuthula Madlala said he will be meeting with the employees soon to further investigate the outcome of the hearing.
