Six-year sentence: Woman gets 2nd chance to avoid jail

2012-08-06 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman who was given a six-year suspended sentence for fraud in 2007 on condition that she repays the R249 450 she stole in monthly installments has been given a second chance to stay out of jail after failing to pay back the money.

Hassina Mohammed (54) was ordered by the court in 2007 to compensate the complainants in the case to the tune of R235 750 and to pay R13 700 to the Asset Forfeiture Unit.

Hassina Mohammed (54) told the court on Friday she was unemployed and had only been able to repay “about R20 000”.

Her sister testified that she and other family members were prepared to take on Mohammed’s debt and undertook to pay R2 000 per month on her sister’s behalf.

Regional magistrate Rose Mogwera expressed her disapproval of Mohammed’s conduct, but said that for the sake of her children, two of whom were said to be very ill, she would give her another chance and further suspend her sentence, but would need her to report at six-monthly intervals.
