Skaters flock to upgraded ice rink at Toti’s Galleria

2011-01-18 00:00

THE first month of the Galleria Ice Rink in Amanzimtoti has been a success, says Aileen Rodel, marketing manager for the Galleria and Arbour Crossing shopping centres.

“It really has attracted a lot of people to the centre,” said Rodel.

The opening on December 10 saw hundreds of shoppers waiting in line to try out the new surface.

The synthetic surface has been replaced with real ice.

It took about 14 days to lay refrigeration pipes and create ice for the rink, which could only start once the equipment was received from overseas.

Two engineers were flown in from Cebu City in the Philippines to oversee the process. They were assisted by local contractors.

Rodel said the rink has 1 000 pairs of ice skates and that later this year ice skates will be made available for sale.

A mini resurfacer is used after sessions to keep the surface smooth.

“The conversion of synthetic ice to real ice has drawn a large number of customers that have enjoyed the ice skating,” said Rodel.

Since the opening about 7 500 visitors have tested out the rink, she added.
