Ski boat accident leaves man critical

2008-09-24 00:00

A Johannesburg man was airlifted to Umhlanga hospital after being critically injured in a boating accident off Sodwana Bay early yesterday morning.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that they dispatched the Netcare helicopter from Virginia airport early this morning with a trauma doctor and paramedics on board. He said a ski boat capsized in rough seas off Sodwana Bay, throwing two occupants overboard. The third was wedged between the boat’s motor and hull.

He sustained severe lacerations to his head and spinal injuries.

Botha said medical staff worked hard to stabilise the man. The severity of his injuries meant that they could not airlift him to Richards Bay as originally planned. Instead, he was taken to Umhlanga Hospital where he was admitted to a level-one trauma facility.

The other two occupants of the boat were not injured.

Botha said the Johannesburg men were doing a diving course at Sodwana Bay, which is known for angling and scuba diving. It forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, formerly known as the St Lucia Wetland Park.
