Slain IFP member’s funeral on Saturday

2012-10-16 00:00

PROMINENT Inkatha Freedom Party member Bongani Lushaba, who was gunned down at Oshabeni last week, will be laid to rest this weekend.

His funeral will start at 9 am on Saturday at his home at Oshabeni, said Hibiscus Coast IFP spokesperson Sifundo Ngwane.

It is still not clear whether his murder was political or motivated by land or taxi issues. He had been in the taxi industry.

No arrests have yet been made, said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Lushaba was the brother and the spokesperson of Inkosi Ziwengu Lusha.

Although he had been a candidate in last year’s local government election, he was not seeking office in the upcoming Oshabeni by-election scheduled for November 7.

Oshabeni ANC Youth League branch chairperson, Dumisani Malunga, and fellow party member Bheki Chiliza were also killed there last month.

Sifiso Khumalo has already pleaded guilty to Malunga’s murder and been sentenced to 22 years’ jail.

He said during his trial that he and Malunga were among four ANC members vying for the position of Oshabeni ward councillor. It had been suggested to him that Malunga should be killed to facilitate his election as councillor, and he had agreed.

Two others have also been arrested and are in custody, awaiting trial.
