Slain children: boyfriend’s rape case to proceed

2009-11-04 00:00

DESPITE a Sweetwaters mother’s alleged killing of her two children in a bid to destroy evidence of the alleged rape of the five-year-old girl, the state is proceeding with a charge of rape against the woman’s boyfriend.

The man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, made another brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday before magistrate Divesh Mootheram. The case was postponed until November 17 when the man is expected to apply for bail.

Prosecutor Ricky van Wyk confirmed that the state is in possession of evidence implicating the accused in spite of the death of the alleged victim, and is pursuing the case against him.

The Mbutshane community was shattered last week by the murders of five-year-old Nontobeko and her three-year-old brother, Xolani Mngadi, allegedly by their mother, Zanele (24), who is due to appear in court again in connection with the deaths tomorrow. She faces two counts of murder and one of defeating the ends of justice.

The children were found in a locked room, having been stabbed to death on October 26. Their throats were slit.
