Slain policeman: A hero to his colleagues and to his family

2008-08-28 00:00

Slain Superintendent Zethembe Chonco, who was station commissioner of Kranskop police station, was not only a “super cop”, he was also a hero in his family. His colleagues and siblings said they will miss him for the role he played in their lives.

One of his colleagues, Superintendent Caroline Minnaar, described Chonco (47) as a “gentleman, intelligent and disciplined”. His younger brother, March Chonco, said he was a father figure in his family.

Chonco was travelling with Inspector Mphatheni Joseph Khanyile (50) when they were ambushed in kwaMaphumulo near kwaDukuza (Stanger) on Wednesday morning. Khanyile is still in a critical condition.

“He would call me ‘Nkosazane’ [lady] and I would call him ‘Sup’,” said Minnaar. “He was the most amazing person I ever dealt with in the SAPS.”

Minnaar became acting station commissioner on August 1 as Chonco was preparing to become the full time commander of the KZN Taxi Task Team.

March Chonco said: “He took care of us, and we depended on him for many things”.

The brothers started working in a Johannesburg factory in 1981, but in 1983 Chonco joined the police, the only job he ever really wanted, said his brother.

He leaves his wife, Londekile, and three daughters.
