Sleepless in Imbali angered by noisy tavern

2009-12-29 00:00

ANGRY Imbali residents are seething over a noisy tavern that is keeping them up at night.

The Witness has been inundated with calls from residents of the area who say ever since the tavern opened a year ago, they are not getting a wink of sleep as loud music is played from dusk to dawn every day.

The residents say the tavern’s noise has worsened.

“When it started last year, there was a lot of noise and we complained and it went, and now it has started up again and is keeping us up all night,” said a local resident.

“We have a lot of elderly people living in the area that require their sleep, but they cannot because of the music. The quality of our lives has gone down quite significantly …”

The resident said last week the loud music and partying started at 6 pm and carried on till 6 am the following day.”

“We called the police on numerous occasions and none of them came.”

Another resident said: “Recently, I saw children as young as 11 coming from that place. Teenage mothers are … spending their child social grants …”

Inspector Joey Jeevan said the police recently arrested the owner, who was released on R500 bail. She said the police will continue to monitor the premises.
